Teaching Award 2009

What an end to our Jubilee celebrations - We are SUSTAINABLE !!

                                     Cardinal Wiseman wins the
DCSF Teaching Award for Sustainable Schools 2009.

Staff and students at Cardinal Wiseman were delighted by the surprise visit of
Matt Baker (from Blue Peter and Country File) accompanied by
representatives from the Teaching Awards, who brought the National Award
for Sustainable Schools to a special assembly .

Sean O’Donovan, who leads the work on Rural Dimension for the school, was
both surprised and delighted by the arrival of the celebrity and the fact that the
school has got national recognition for its innovative work.

Cardinal Wiseman has been successful in achieving the Teaching Award
because of the wide range of work completed at the school. The grounds,
including the farm and gardens, are used as a classroom for pupils from
Cardinal Wiseman and local primary schools. Pupils learn how to care for
their planet, about recycling waste, using resources wisely and engaging in
challenging projects in partnership with Severn Trent Water and the Young
Chamber of Commerce. The biggest challenge to date has been setting up a
partnership with a community in Malawi, in the recognition that we are all
connected to each other in a world with limited resources.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the school”, said Head Teacher, Helen
Knight. “It is recognition of the commitment of all the pupils and staff who
have worked together over many years to become good stewards of the
environment. Their poster states ’It is our future’ and they are working to make
sure that it is a sustainable one.”

Our thanks go to all the businesses and organisations who continue to help
the school to develop all of our environment projects.

Our next challenge is fundraising for the Malawi trip 2010 and the sale of
Cardinal Wiseman tea!!
